813,597. Making gudgeon-pins. SCHMIDT G.m.b.H., K. April 9, 1957 [April 9, 1956; March 6, 1957], No. 11620/57. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A hollow gudgeon-pin c, Fig. 2, for the piston of an I.C. or other engine comprises reinforcement members f, g in the form of discs, rings, webs or the like positioned at points which are particularly liable to develop cracks. The discs f, g are pressed into the pin c and welded in position at points which are disposed between the piston bosses, on the one hand, and the small end of the connecting rod, on the other hand. Alternatively the discs may be replaced by spider-like elements, or, as shown in Fig. 5, the pin c may be built up by welding together two or more similar cups h, i having two or more suitably-placed integral webs k, m, the weld bead o being subsequently removed. In a further modification, the pin is formed from two semi-cylindrical shells p, q, Fig. 7, provided with integral webs r, s and welded together along the longitudinal joint u. The cups and shells are produced by machining from the solid, hot or cold pressing, or casting.
