Abstract

646,073. Moulding metal-covered rubber torsion springs. SPENCER MOULTON & CO., Ltd., G., MOULTON, A. E., and VARGA, O. H. Dec. 11, 1947, Nos. 32677/47 and 28001/48. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A rubber torsionspring (see Group XXXII) is manufactured in a mould structure comprising a cylinder 6 in which an outer metal shell 2 of the spring is a sleeve fit. Inner shell components 3 and 4 of the spring, on which a rubber element 1 is built-up, are positioned on a hollow mandrel 11 of quasielliptical form within the outer shell 2. End caps 7 and 8 of the mould structure are provided with annular bosses 9 and 10 which project into the shell 2 and which are compressed on to the end faces of the rubber element 1, before the latter is cured in a vulcanizer of the direct or superheated steam type. The mandrel may be provided with longitudinally-disposed projections, flats or depressions in the gaps between the edges of the inner shell components in order to shape those portions of the rubber which are not bonded to the inner shell components during the curing operation.
