Abstract
706,631. Uniting by fusion. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. April 17, 1952 [May 21, 1951], No. 11826/51. Class 83 (4) A single V- or U-type of welded butt joint between metal pipes or tubular parts 1, 2 made of steel or alloys which have high strength at elevated temperatures and a high resistance to creep under load is made by depositing an initial layer or layers 3 of metal which is relatively ductile, of low creep strength and does not fail by intergranular cracking under sustained working stress and temperature, and subsequent layers 4 of metal which has a creep strength at elevated temperatures comparable with that of the parts 1, 2 which are prepared for the joint simply by machining. The parts 1, 2 may be steam pipes of ferritic chromium-molybdenum steel, the layer 3 may be mild steel and the layer 4 may be carbon-molybdenum steel, chromium-molybdenum steel, molybdenum-vanadium steel or chromiummolybdenum-vanadium steel. The outer surface of the joint may be dressed smooth or, alternatively, an outer layer of mild steel may be deposited on the joint. A backing ring may be placed between the pipe ends.
