Abstract
618,610. Making compound billets. SUPERIOR STEEL CORPORATION. June 14, 1946, No. 17905. Convention date, Sept. 6, 1945. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion, welding.-A bimetallic billet comprises a backing plate 2 of steel containing at least 0.30 per cent carbon and a facing 3 of stainless steel containing at least 10 per cent chromium joined by a layer 4 of steel containing not more than 0.15 per cent carbon. A fillet weld 10 is made by a welding rod of steel containing not more than 0.15 per cent carbon. The edges of the facing are welded to exclude air from the joint, which is sufficiently ductile to withstand heating and rolling of the billet without cracking.
