628,197. Making composite strip. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION..July 9, 1947, No. 18092. Convention date, March 6, 1946. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Working at specified temperatures; rolling; welding.-In uniting an aluminium or aluminium alloy strip to a metal backing strip, e.g. of steel, nickel, nickel-copper, chrome-iron or the like, the backing has one faced cleaned by sandblasting or the like, and both strips are heated to 910‹ to 1010‹ F., preferably 975‹ F. and welded by rolling to produce a reduction in the aluminium thickness of at least 30 per cent. The minimum reduction is 20 per cent at the higher temperature limit and below 910‹ F. greater reductions are produced. The aluminium 22 and cleaned steel strip 20 are fed into a reducing, e.g. hydrogen, gas furnace 21, united by rolls 24 therein and cooled in a chamber 28. Specification 628,198 is referred to.
