Abstract

755,333. Making compound plates and sheets. LUKENS STEEL CO. Feb. 3, 1954 [Aug. 14, 1953], No. 3221/54. Drawings to Specification. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Rolling; welding by pressure.-In a method of cladding a metal backing such as stainless steel, copper, nickel, &c., with a layer of titanium or its alloys an intermediate layer of iron-chromium alloy is inserted and the pack is heat-treated and reduced in thickness by rolling, forging, pressing, swaging, &c. to produce the bond. The heat-treatment is carried out at a temperature between 1200-1850‹ F. for ¢-1¢ hours per inch of pack thickness and the amount of reduction is at least four to one. The chromium alloy may be clad to a metal which easily bonds with the backing metal. Specification 755,033 describes suitable arrangements of packs.
