Abstract
772,859. Making compound sheets; rolling; working at specified temperatures. LUKENS STEEL CO. June 22, 1955 [April 27, 1955], No. 18054/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of cladding steel with zirconium a sheet of zirconium 11, Fig. 1, is electroplated on one face with nickel or iron and formed with a steel plate 5 into a hermetically sealed pack which is heated and supplied with inert gas prior to reducing the thickness by rolling to form a bond. The pack is formed between the plate 5 to be bonded and a second plate 6 which is covered with a parting compound 10 such as graphite and has spacer bars 7, 8, welded along its edges to form a recess for the zirconium plate 11 and to which the plate 5 is subsequently welded to form the sealed pack. Argon gas is supplied to the pack through pipes 13 during the welding process and subsequent heating to 1000‹ to 1550‹ F. The heating is carried out for about one hour per inch of thickness after which the pack is rolled, pressed or forged to bring about a reduction of not less than 20 per cent. In a modification two sheets of zirconium are placed back-to-back in a pack formed between two steel-backing-plates.
