Abstract

628,198. Making composite strip. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 9, 1947, No. 18093. Convention date, March 6, 1946. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Working at specified temperatures; rolling; welding.-In uniting an aluminium or aluminium alloy strip to a metal backing strip, e.g. of steel, nickel, nickel-copper, chrome-iron or the like, the backing is copper &c. plated and the two strips are heated to 910‹ to 1010‹ F., preferably 975‹ F., in a non-oxidising atmosphere, and welded by rolling, the aluminium decreasing in thickness preferably by at least 30 per cent. The least reduction is 20 per cent at the highest temperature, and for temperatures below 910‹ F. the reduction is greater than 30 per cent. The aluminium strip 22 and copperplated steel strip 20 are fed into an inert &c. gas furnace 21 and united by rolls 24 therein, the composite strip 26 being cooled in a chamber 28.
