Abstract

1,062,320. Making composite metal sheet; welding by pressure; working at specified temperatures. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Dec. 20, 1965 [Dec. 29, 1964], No. 53811/65. Headings B3A, B3R and B3V. [Also in Division E1] In a method of making a rolled, multi-layer steeltitanium composite, a layer of titanium and a steel plate have wavey mating surfaces and the pockets so formed contain an alloy intermediate in composition between the titanium and steel layers, the pockets constituting less than 30% of the total bond area. The titanium is explosively bonded to the steel and the composite is hot rolled within a temperature range of 900-1650‹ C. until the ratio X/A increases from 5: 1-15: 1 to 20: 1-1000: 1, where X is the average length of the repeating units in the interface configuration and A is half the average height of the waves therein as indicated in Fig. 1.
