Abstract

1294522 Making composites; jointing by rolling; welding by pressure E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 30 Jan 1970 [31 Jan 1969] 4571/70 Headings B3A B3M and B3R [Also in Divisions E1 and F2] A composite comprises dissimilar metals of high yield strength metallurgically bonded to a malleable metallic interlayer one high strength metal being Al- or Ni-base maraging steel, or austenitic or martensitic stainless steel, another being Al- (if the first is not Al-base), Ti- or Zr-base and the interlayer consisting of at least one layer of Al-, Nb-, Ta- or Ti-base metal provided that a Fe- or Ni-base metal is not bonded to an Al- or Ti-base interlayer. The metals may be bonded by roll bonding, friction or flash butt welding or by explosion bonding. The explosion bonding is carried out in one or more steps using an explosive of 45-65% by weight of a mixture of 80% ammonium nitrate and 20% trinitrotoluene and 35-55% sodium chloride. The collision velocity and collision angle are below 2500 m./s. and 8-14 degrees respectively to produce a bond comprising a straight and continuous solidified melt layer of less than 40 Á or a wavy bond having at least 70% direct metal to metal bond and a solidified melt bond. A tubular joint (Fig. 3, not shown) may be machined from a planar composite (Fig. 1, not shown) the ends of the joint being adapted to be welded to tubes of the same material as the ends. A tubular transition joint (Fig. 4, not shown) may alternatively be machined from a tubular composite (Fig. 2, not shown). Two or more interlayers of commercially pure metal or alloy may be used.
