Abstract

1381183 Making structural metal panels; joining by rolling; welding by pressure; working at specified temperatures IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 6 March 1973 [30 March 1972] 15017/72 Headings B3A B3M B3R and B3V [Also in Division E1] A method of making a structural metal panel comprises providing an assembly of a first sheet 11 and a plurality of individual narrow second sheets 13 of metal, the second sheets having the property of superplasticity, disposing the second sheets on the first sheet after coating stripes 12 of stop-weld material upon either the first sheet or the second sheets, bonding the sheets together at the uncoated regions, applying fluid pressure between the sheets at the coated regions to expand the second sheets superplastically away from the first sheet to form hollow reinforcing sections 16. The first sheet 11 and the second sheets 13 are of titanium alloy and the sheets 13 are located with their centres over the stop-weld stripes 12. A similar assembly 11a, 13a is placed on the assembly 11, 13 with the formed sheets 13 nesting between the formed sheets 13a. The edges 15, 15a are welded together, e.g. by electron beam welding. The assemblies are passed between rolls to bond the second sheets to the first sheets, a separating layer 14 preventing bonding together of the assemblies. The assemblies are separated by shearing off the edges 15, 15a, and each is then placed in a die having a complementary shape to that of the finished panel. The die is heated to 950‹ C. and gas, e.g. argon, is injected along the path of each stripe 12. The sheets of each assembly may alternatively be bonded together statically between the platens of a press. The panels may be used in the construction of highspeed aircraft.
