Abstract
1429054 Making composite panels; stamping BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 23 July 1974 [24 July 1973] 35293/73 Headings B3A and B3Q [Also in Division E1] A method of forming a panel comprises positioning a metal facing sheet 1, 2 on each side of an interior sheet 3 of an alloy which exhibits superplastic behaviour, attaching spaced regions of the interior sheet alternately to each facing sheet, heating the assembly of sheets to a temperature at which the interior sheet exhibits superplasticity, and moving the facing sheets apart so that the interior sheet extends from one facing sheet to the other in alternate sequence. In one embodiment, the facing sheets are sealed one to the other to form an inflatable envelope assembly. The sheets are subjected to a welding operation around their peripheries at a region 8, Fig. 8. Spacer portions 4 in the form of strips, or portions 5 in the form of discs, are diffusion bonded to the sheets, and upon the moving apart of the sheets 1, 2 by inert gas under pressure a corrugated interior sheet or a dimpled interior sheet is formed. In a further embodiment, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the welded regions are in the form of lines (6) or spots (7). To maintain flat outer surfaces, the sheets 1, 2 may be moved apart against press platens and the interior sheet may be of thinner gauge material than the facing sheets. The sheets 1, 2 may also be of a superplastic alloy, thus facilitating the forming of a non-flat panel.
