Abstract
1311970 Jointing by rolling; making composite sheets CEGEDUR GP 14 April 1970 [16 April 1969] 17662/70 Headings B3A and B3M [Also in Division C7] A composite sheet of aluminium alloys, or of aluminium and at least one aluminium alloy having local variations in composition on its surface so as to produce tint variations when anodized, is formed by jointing by hot rolling a composite cover sheet formed of at least two aluminium alloys, or aluminium and at least one aluminium alloy and having local composition variations on its surface to a thicker aluminium or aluminium alloy plate and further rolling the assembly to less than <SP>1</SP>/ 15 of its original thickness, e.g. <SP>1</SP>/ 500 . The ratio between the thicknesses of the thicker plate and cover sheet before jointing is at least 5 : 1, e.g. 20 : 1. In an example, the surface layer of an Al-Si alloy and the subjacent layer of an Al-Mn alloy of an Al-Si : Al-Mn composite is locally melted in desired areas to cause the two alloys to mix thereby producing local composition variations. The Al-Mn side of the composite is then joined by hot rolling to a thicker plate of Al-Mn-Mg alloy, and the assembly further rolled. The rolled composite is subsequently anodized to form the tint variations.
