Abstract

1,264,669. Making composite electrodes; jointing by rolling; welding by fusion. KAISER ALUMINIUM & CHEMICAL CORP. 11 April, 1969 [23 Sept., 1968], No. 18663/69. Headings B3A, B3M and B3R. [Also in Divisions C7, H2 and H3-H5] A transition insert for use in joining aluminium to ferrous conductors comprises an aluminous plate roll bonded to a ferrous plate. The aluminous plate is welded to -the -aluminium conductor and the ferrous plate is welded or bolted to the ferrous conductor. The inserts use the following metals (a) EC grade aluminium- 304 stainless steel (b) EC grade aluminium- Bridge steel i.e. a 0À26% carbon steel with 0À33% Si and a maximum of 1À30% Mn. (c) two central 304 stainless steel plates sandwiched between two 3003 aluminium plates or (d) two 1020 steel plates sandwiched between two 1100 aluminium plates. The plates were abrasively cleaned, laid together, heated, and reduced in a single pass through a rolling mill to form the insert. As shown in Fig. 6 an iron conductor 26 is bolted to the depending portions of the ferrous plates 30 of an insert and an aluminium conductor 34 is welded to the aluminous plate 32 of the roll bonded insert. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the insert comprises a ferrous plate sandwiched between two aluminous plates. The aluminium conductor is welded to the edges of the aluminous plates and one of the aluminous plates is partially removed to expose the central ferrous plate which is bolted to an iron conductor by a bolt countersunk in the complete aluminous plate. The iron conductor is a stub embedded in a carbon or graphite electrode of an electrolytic furnace.
