941,242. Making composite metal sheets; jointing by rolling. PITTSBURGH STEEL CO. April 25, 1962, No. 15772/62. Headings B3A and B3M. A method of making clad steel strip is characterized in that a strip of carbon steel and a strip of nickel plated stainless steel, the nickel plating being between 0.0001 to 0.001 inch thick, are brought together with the nickel plating between them and are heated in a suitable non-oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. hydrogen diluted with nitrogen, to a pressure welding temperature of not less than 1650‹ F. and then rolled whilst at this temperature to weld the strips together and to reduce the combined thickness of the strips by 30 to 45% of their original combined thickness. The temperature range for pressure welding is 1650‹ to 1850‹ F. with 1750‹ F. as an optimum temperature. In a modification a stainless steel strip is applied to each side of a carbon steel strip.
