Abstract
625,005. Pipe couplings. TICKNER, A., (Mercier, P. E.). May 12, 1943, No. 7558. [Class 99(i)] A pipe 1, Fig. 1, for exhaust gases &c. is coupled to another member in a line by a collar 2 flared outwardly to form an arcuate annulus resiliently gripped between a pair of arcuate metallic members 3, 4, at least one of the members and/or the annulus having different arcuate curvatures and at least the outer of the members 3, 4 terminating in a flange 8 secured to the other member in the line. In Fig. 1, the member 4 has a flange 9, a flanged ring 5 is interposed between the flanges 8, 9 and a plate 6 drilled for bolts whereby the pipe 1 is coupled to a pipe 7 and the three flanges are connected by spot welding. In Fig. 3, pipes 11, 11a have collars gripped between a single inner member 14 and two outer members 13, 13a spot welded at 16. In Fig. 5, the joint assembly is slidable, a collar 12 having an extension slidable between extensions on a flange 21 and on a plate 6. The joint itself is a modification of that of Fig. 3, the member 14 being replaced by a member 19 recessed at 20 and having a rim 19a gripped between the members 13, 13a. In Fig. 6, (not shown), an exhaust manifold is connected to a three-cylinder head by a central rigid joint and two slidable joints as shown in Fig. 5.
