Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent stress corrosion cracking by forming a melt sprayed layer of metal of high stress corrosion cracking sensitivity resistance in the part corresponding to the weld heat-affected zone of materials to be welded. CONSTITUTION:A Cr melt-sprayed layer 2 is made by a melt spraying method on the inside surface at the leading end of a pipe base metal 1 in welding austenitic stainless steel pipes to themselves. The layer 2 is not limited to Cr metal and may be a melt-sprayed layer of, for example, Ni, Mo, etc. or a melt-sprayed layer of austenitic stainless steel of less content of carbon. After the layer 2 is applied, the leading ends of the pipes are edge prepared to single Vee groove type. Next, the bevels of the pipes are but welded to themselves. Since the Cr layer is melt-sprayed extremely thinly, residual stress is extremely small as compared to the one with the build-up welded inside surfaces of pipes, and the Cr layer forms an oxidized film during use, which is desirable in preventing stress corrosion cracking.
