Abstract

1283047 Welding by fusion NEVILLE & WILLIS (WELDING & FABRICATIONS) Ltd 23 Sept 1969 [24 Sept 1968] 45226/68 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] A composite flange comprises a flange of cheap metallic material, the front and rear faces of which are coated immediately adjacent the aperture with a more expensive metallic material by buttering (a technique involving the laying or spreading of the more expensive metal in molten form upon the flange). In the embodiment shown, a pipe coupling flange 1, e.g. of carbon steel, is machined so as to be rebated at 5 and 6 and a thin layer of high chromium content stainless steel (e.g. 25% Cr, 12% Ni) is welded to the surfaces of the rebates. Further welding with a lower chromium content stainless steel (e.g. 18% Cr, 8% Ni or 18% Cr, 10% Ni, 3% Nb) fills the rebates and stands proud of the flange (dotted lines). The flange is then remachined to remove excess stainless steel and provide a mating surface. A stainless steel pipe may be inserted into the flange and welded to the stainless facings so that there is no discontinuity of material in an assembled pipe run. Other materials, e.g. aluminium bronze and " Monel " (Registered Trade Mark) may be used for the coating.
