Abstract

393,407. Pistons. TRIUMPH CO., Ltd. and SYKES, A. A., Priory Street, Coventry. May 5, 1932, No. 12974. [Class 122 (i).] A cast aluminium or light alloy piston has gudgeon pin bosses 3, Fig. 2, formed in the skirt and internally connected with the head 2, with an internal flange 5 formed on the lower portion of the skirt, and with the middle portion of the skirt by ribs 4, 6, 7 respectively. The skirt is provided with an H-slit, the horizontal portions 9, 9, Fig. 1, of which are situated beneath the piston-ring grooves 8 and above the flange 5 respectively, and extend between the ribs 4, 6, 7 ; the joining portion 10 of the slit extends substantially longitudinally of the skirt. Two such slits may be provided on opposite sides of the skirt. The walls of the skirt decrease in thickness from the head 2 downwards, the external diameter of the skirt being uniform, and substantially greater than that of the portion of the head in which the piston-ring grooves 8 are formed. The band 12 immediately below the lowest ring groove is of slightly less diameter than the head above it, and is provided with oil-draining holes 13. The lower edge of the skirt may be cut away as at 14 as high as the flange 5.
