[Class 126.] To produce an effect of flames and smoke in an imitation fire, flickering light is made to fall on a perforated screen 4 and a reflector 1 arranged in spaced relation behind it, and preferably having an irregular reflecting surface formed by corrugating, indenting, faceting or otherwise deforming it. The reflector may also be formed of a number of rough pieces, for example of broken glass. The screen consists of gauze, which may be coloured and has about fifty perforations to the inch. It may consist of metal or fabric, and may be dull or bright ; it may be treated with cellulose containing metal powder. Alternatively, it may be formed of copper gauze, the surface of which becomes multi-coloured by oxidation, or of chain mesh material. The upper part and sides of the reflector, or of the screen, or both, may be darker than the centre. The reflector may have openings through it, and may be extended as shown in broken lines to reflect light upwardly. It may be stamped or pressed from the back of the fire, or be formed as a separate sheet or sheets. Pieces of reflecting material may be secured to the screen and to the reflector a coloured and irregular-surfaced glass screen 8 is interposed between the light source and the screen and reflector.
