[Class 126] In an imitation fire comprising imitation fuel 10 and a surface or screen 14 on which flame or smoke effects are produced by light from a flicker device 11, an additional light source 21 is provided beneath or behind the fuel to illuminate it by a steady light, and means 16 virtually completely hidden by the fuel is provided for preventing light from the flicker device passing to the lower parts of the fuel which thus present a steady glowing effect. In the construction shown, the fire as a whole, the flicker device 11, and the screen 14, are similar to those described in Specifications 404,302, 426,887, and 427,412, the screen 14 being translucent and having a matt outer surface on which the flame-like images are formed. The means for preventing light from the flicker device from reaching the lower part of the fuel comprises a metal sheet 16 secured to the lower edge of the screen 14 and having an opening 20 through which the lamp 21 projects to provide the steady glow. The front of the sheet is reflecting, and a bent portion 24 at one or both sides of the lamp reflects the light upwardly. Alternatively, the screen 14 may extend substantially to the base of the fire, the lower part being rendered reflecting and substantially opaque by silvering, and replacing the sheet 16. To prevent reflection of light passing from the lamp 21 through the screen 14 on to the flicker device 11, the domed top of the device may bo darkened by painting, oxidizing, or otherwise.
