Abstract
406,813. Valves. JOHNSON & SONS, Ltd., C. H., Smedley Road, Manchester, and HARTLEY, J. A., 2, Glendene Avenue, Bramhall, Cheshire. Nov. 9, 1932, No. 31596. [Class 7 (vi).] Internal-combustion pile-drivers, rammers, and the like, for example as described in Specifications 293,228, 313,516, [both in Class 124], and 347,492, and in which the piston head b is separate from the rod e and carries a plate valve 1 and a central valve 4, both serving as exhaust valves, the peripheries of these valves are rounded at 2 and 5 to prevent striking. Alternatively, or in addition, the sides of the chambers in which the valves work may be rounded. The valve 1 is formed with exhaust ports 3, and is pressed open by springs b<2> when, following the explosion, the piston separates from its rod. The valve 4 is then forced open and the exhaust gases pass through the ports 3 to the underside of the piston and then out to atmosphere.
