Abstract

534,601. Percussive tools. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. March 27, 1940, No. 5528. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1939. [Class 124] [Also in Group XXVII] An internal combustion percussive tool comprises a driving piston 11 which is positively reciprocated by alternately ignited combustion chambers 27, 28 at opposite ends of a cylinder 8, 9 and resilient means controlled by said piston and longitudinally spaced therefrom for actuating a hammer piston 14 in both directions. The piston 11 is rigidly connected by a rod 12 to a cylindrical cage 13 movable within a barrel 10, and a stem on the piston 14 extends through the cage to strike the bar 15. Upward and downward movements of the bar 15 are limited by a shoulder 23 and a rubber cushion 19. A head 38 on piston 11 co-operates with upper and lower pre - compression chambers 36, and projections 51 serve to deflect fresh gas away from the exhaust ports 32, 33. Ignition in the chambers 27, 28 is effected by sparking plugs 49, 52 controlled by coils C1, C2 and a spring-controlled bellcrank interrupter 56 having inclined surfaces engaged by a stud 61 fixed to the case 13 and passing through an opening 60 in the barrel 10. The engine may be started by means of a manually operable plunger 63 having a pin connectable with the upper projection 51.
