Abstract

618,745. Percussive tools. WARSOP PETROL DRILL & TOOLS, Ltd., and WARSOP, N. W. Nov. 28, 1946, No. 35344. [Class 124] [Also in Group XXVII] In a percussive tool, in which a free piston 18 strikes the tool 25 on ignition of a charge in a chamber 12 between it and a piston 3 working on a two-stroke cycle with crank-case compression, the transfer passage 16 and its port are shaped so that the charge swirls round a concave head 14 and draws up the piston 18 ready for the next stroke. This piston is preferably formed hollow at 19 to form a continuously-curved surface with the head 14 and has a flange 20 which reciprocates in a buffer chamber 23. A non-return valve may allow air to enter the space below the flange 20 and assist in lifting the piston 18.
