Abstract
236,348. Roberts, E. W. May 26, 1924. Percussive hand tools. - In a portable internal-combustion percussive tool, the hammer piston 5 is connected to a transverse flywheel 8 by means of a cross-pin 7 working between cams 15, 16 carried by the heels of the flywheel, the cam groove being widened at the point shown in Fig. 4, so as to leave the hammer free immediately after the moment of impact. The cam 15 is shaped to give four strokes of the piston for each complete revolution, the cam 16 being used only at starting by hand. The charge entering past a, handcontrolled throttle 40, operated by means of a wire 41, is compressed by the front end of the piston and transferred through an axial passage 6 past a valve 21. Exhaust takes place through ports 47. Ignition contacts 44, 46 are attached to the flywheel and cylinder respectively. The flywheel is formed with oblique blades 8<a>, producing a current of cooling air under a non-conducting hood 32. The tool shank 25 is held flush with its socket 4 by the action of a spring 28, and is not struck by the hammer piston until the tool is pressed against the work.
