[Class 124] In an internal - combustion hammer in which the combustion chamber 2 is formed between the engine piston 3 and a differential impact piston 5, an external conduit 15 provided with a stop-valve 17 and extending from a point 16 in the chamber 2 at about which the maximum pressure prevails during the expansion stroke, conveys gases from the engine to a longitudinal bore 11 in the drill 8, byepassing the cylinder of the differential piston 5. The point 16 may be substantially opposite the spark plug 4. The conduit 15 may be coupled to a pressure accumulator, and the valve 17 may be manually controlled or it may be opened and closed automatically after a predetermined number of revolutions of the engine. The rod 7 of the piston 5 has a longitudinal bore 10. Gases below the maximum pressure are conveyed from the cylinder 2 through passages 12, 12<1> to return the piston 5 to its initial position, thereby compressing air in the space 13, this air being conveyed by the bores 10, 11 to the drill hole.
