A percussive tool operated by internal combustion having a free piston provided with an auxiliary piston mounted in an auxiliary cylinder connected to the combustion cylinder has, at or near the end wall of the auxiliary cylinder remote from the combustion cylinder, a non- return valve connected to atmosphere, the valve being loaded to open when the pressure in the auxiliary cylinder is greater than that normally required to return the piston. As shown, a striking piston 10 has an auxiliary piston 16 of larger diameter operating in a cylinder 18 which has a non-return valve 46 connected to the combustion chamber 20 by a channel 44 to supply pressure to return the piston 10 after a working stroke. A non-return valve 52 is mounted in the wall of the auxiliary chamber near or at the end remote from the combustion chamber and is so loaded that it opens to atmosphere if the pressure in the space 42 rises above that normally required to return the piston 10. The gas producing the return stroke to the piston is released to atmosphere by a non-return valve 60 situated in the upper part of the auxiliary cylinder wall, which valve also releases pressure due to compression of air drawn into the chamber 50 above the auxiliary piston during the working stroke. The drill steel may be rotated by a mechanism 40 which may be rendered inoperative.
