Abstract
718,133. Percussive drills. BERGMAN, G. A. Feb. 22, 1952, No. 4763/52. Class 124. An internal combustion engine driven percussive drill in which the return stroke of the striking piston is produced by a gas cushion has a non-return valve for the delivery of compressed gas to the gas cushion, and a power loaded valve, operating on the attainment of a predetermined pressure in the gas chamber, opens to allow the escape of gas from the gas cushion. As shown, a ball 17 in the exit of a passage 8 from the combustion chamber lifts to admit compressed gas into the gas cushion 7 below a striking piston 4 and is returned to its seating when the pressure due to the downward movement of piston 4 is greater than that in the combustion chamber. A second, spring loaded, ball 22, closing a passage 9 from the gas cushion and leading to an annular space 10 from which the gases escape through a hollow steel 16, opens on downward movement of the piston 4 and before the entrance 27 to the passage 9 is closed by the piston. The pressure required to lift the ball 22 may be adjusted by a screwed plug 25 on which one end of a spring 26 rests, Fig. 3. The ball 17 may be operated by an external source of compressed gas.
