Abstract

700,471. Percussive drills. PRIESS, H. April 17, 1951, No. 8944/51. Class 124 The hammer blow in a spring operated percussive tool is produced by the convolutions of a tension spring striking one another. As shown a spring 14 fixed at one end in a piston 15, has at its other end a piston 18 sliding in a cylinder forming part of a housing 10. A valve 24 admits compressed air through a port 28 below the piston which moves upwards and puts the spring 14 under tension. A rod 21. passing through the top of the cylinder and having a return spring 19 and a plate 22 on its upper end rises with the piston 18 and moves the valve upward, cutting off the air supply and opening an exhaust port 30 releasing the tension on the spring which causes the piston 15 which has a small movement to strike a blow on the steel 12. A rod, pivoted in the valve 24, has one end in the space above the plate 22 and the other end connected by an adjustable rod to the operating handle 33, and by adjustment of the rod the point at which air is cut off, and hence the power of the blow, may be varied, Fig. 2 (not shown). A pin 17 holding the piston 16 may be removed when operation of the piston 18 will produce a blow in the upward direction.
