Abstract
1,154,593. Percussive tools. C. LEAVELL. 13 June, 1966, No. 26235/66. Heading B4C. A percussive tool, such as a paving breaker, comprises a hammer piston 13 reciprocably mounted in a cylinder 12 and adapted to strike, via an anvil 15, a tool bit 19, the reaction forces acting on the tool housing 11 being counterbalanced by means of an oscillatory member 20. The cylinder 12 is held in the housing 11 by means of a threaded nut 11a and is shaped so as together with the housing, a chamber 21 for the member 20 is provided. The member 20 is formed with surfaces 20d, 20e confronting respectively surfaces 21a, 21b formed on the housing. In operation, upon pressing a valve 12f, compressed air is fed, via a distributing valve 12<SP>1</SP>, passage 17a, annular space 17b and ports 17c, to act on the underside of the piston 13, thereby moving it upwardly. The air flows through a passage 17 into a chamber 21 so as to act on the surface 20d of the member 20, thereby causing a resultant upward force to act on the surface 21a so as to counterbalance the resultant downward force on the housing as the piston is moving upwardly. When the piston reaches the end of its upward stroke, the valve 12<SP>1</SP> is actuated so as to cause the air to act on the top of the piston and drive it downwardly to strike the anvil 15. In order to counterbalance the upward force on the housing, the air is also fed, via a passage 22 into the chamber 21 and so act on the surface 20e of the member 20, thereby producing a downward force on the housing. The member 20 is maintained in a stable position in the chamber 21 so as not to strike the housing, by means of a piston 23 formed on the member 20 and acted upon continuously by compressed air fed through a passage 30, restriction 29, space 27 and a cylinder 24. When the member 20 falls below a certain level, the top edge of the piston 23 uncovers exhaust ports 25a in the housing and so allows the member to be repositioned by the compressed air in the chamber 21.
