Abstract

1379560 Percussion devices F W ROSS 23 Nov 1971 [4 Dec 1970] 54296/71 Heading B4C An impact device comprises a cylinder 10, a piston 42 slidable within the cylinder and having a shaft 44 extending through an end wall of the cylinder, a rotary motor 14, and a tool holder 52 or anvil 95 (Fig. 7). The motor is connected to one of the piston and cylinder by means of an eccentric or crank and a convecting rod, so that rotary motion of the motor shaft is converted into reciprocation of the piston or cylinder. The cylinder space does not communicate with the atmosphere or only communicates therewith via apertures arranged at the mid-length of the cylinder. Reciprocation of the one of the piston and cylinder results in the other impacting the tool holder or anvil. The motor may be an electric motor, an hydraulic motor or an I.C. engine. As illustrated, the cylinder is connected to the motor, and in an embodiment not illustrated a counterweight is reciprocated by the motor to oppose the reciprocations of the cylinder. The device of Fig. 7 may be provided with the spring arrangement of Fig. 8 between and connected to the motor and cylinder to oppose the motion of the cylinder.
