979,744. Percussive tools. T. MIKIYA. Feb. 8, 1963 [Aug. 7, 1962], No. 5296/63. Heading B4C. A compressed air-actuated percussive tool comprises a rear cylinder 1 in which a hammer piston 22 slides, a front cylinder 2, a toolholder 35 slidable in the front cylinder, air passages 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, 16 formed in the walls of the cylinders, valve means 8 controlling the supply of air to the passages, an inlet port 30 and exhaust port 32 for admitting and exhausting air from the rear of the piston when the latter is in a retracted and advanced position respectively, a port 41 for introducing compressed air from the passage 16 into air passages 40 in the holder when it is in its advanced position, an anvil 34, and exhaust ports 32, 44 for connecting the spaces above and below the anvil to atmosphere. The retracted position of the piston 22, anvil 34 and tool-holder 35 is as shown in Fig. 2, so that in operation, when the valve 8 is opened by means of a lever 9 compressed air is fed via a passage 18, ports 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, 30, 29 into a bore 23 in the piston to thereby drive the latter against anvil which, in turn, strikes the tool-holder 35. Towards the end of the stroke of the tool-holder, the air is fed via the passage 16, port 41 and ports 40, 40<SP>1</SP> in the tool-holder into a space defined by a shoulder 42 on the front cylinder and the adjacent end face of the holder, the air trapped in the space providing a cushion effect. When the stroke of the holder is completed as shown in Fig. 1, air in the passage 16 communicates with the ports 40, 40<SP>1</SP> via the port 41 and thereby returns the holder. The piston 22 is returned partly under its own weight and partly by the force, transmitted via the anvil, of the expansion of air in the end spaces.
