Abstract

1,030,136. Percussive tools. KANGO ELECTRIC HAMMERS Ltd. Oct. 16, 1964 [Oct. 23, 1963], No. 41778/63. Heading B4C. A power-operated percussive tool comprises relatively reciprocable inner and outer members 6, 7 forming an air chamber 9 between them, momentary venting means 12, 14, 19, 20 being provided in order to allow air trapped in the chamber to adjust to a substantially constant working level during normal operation of the tool and also to immobilize the outer member when it moves beyond its normal blow-striking position. The inner member 6 is in the form of a piston connected by a rod 5 to a crank 24 which is rotated by an electric motor via gears 3, 4, the piston being formed with a sealing head portion 15. The outer member constitutes a striker cylinder having an impact end adapted to strike the end 55 of a tool holder 54 described fully in Specification 1,030,137 and provided with two annular grooves 19, 20 within its bore for co-operation with the sealing head portion of the piston. In operation, the piston is reciprocated such that when the sealing head passes beyond the annular groove 19, the air trapped in the chamber 9 is compressed and thereby urges the striker cylinder rapidly forward to strike the tool holder end 55; the striker is returned to its normal position by a suction effect produced by the piston as it returns until the piston reaches the position shown in Fig. 2 where communication is made with atmosphere via grooves 14 in the piston skirt and the annular groove 20. In order to prevent damage to the tool, when the tool bit 57 is removed therefrom, due to the striker cylinder assuming a lowerthan-normal position, the second groove 20 co-operates with the sealing head so that a larger volume of air is trapped in the chamber 9 and the suction produced on the return stroke of the piston is not large enough to return the striker.
