Abstract
1,191,218. Cartridge-actuated tools. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 2 July, 1968 [11 July, 1967], No. 31576/68. Heading B4C. A cartridge-actuated tool for driving fasteners into hard material comprises a drive piston 80 movable in a barrel 50 which is telescopically mounted in a housing 2 so as to be slidable in order to cock a firing mechanism 10, a pawl 96 for returning the piston from its driven position to its driving position upon forward movement of the barrel, and a cam surface 108 for moving the pawl out of the path of the piston when the barrel has been moved into a position in which the firing mechanism is cocked. The pawl 96 is mounted in a housing 92 and urged by a spring 100 into the bore of the barrel. In order to cock the firing mechanism 10 the muzzle end 64 of the barrel is pressed against a workpiece so that the firing pin 24 is cocked via a rod 36. The rearward movement of the barrel causes the cam surface 108 to act on a shoulder formed on the pawl thereby moving the latter out of the path of the piston. At the end of the driving stroke, the barrel may be withdrawn from the housing so that the pawl engages behind the head 78 of the piston in order to return the latter to its initial firing position. A rubber buffer 88 is provided in order to prevent damage in the event of an overtravel of the piston.
