914,055. Percussion tools. OMARK INDUSTRIES Inc. April 10, 1959 [April 11, 1958], No. 12260/59. Class 124. An impact tool comprises a piston reciprocable in a cylinder, means urging the piston to one end of the cylinder, a second means to move the piston from the one end to an intermediate position in the cylinder, a lock for the second means, a manual control to unlock the second means, means to introduce a charge of fuel and air during movement of the piston to the intermediate position, and means to fire the charge to produce an impact. As shown, a cylinder 22 has a piston 28 sliding therein and urged towards one end by a spring 36 surrounding a piston-rod 32 which carries an extension 46 supported in a guide 26. A piston 56 urged towards the piston 28 by a spring 62 is held in a retracted position by a latch 76 engaging a locking member 74 which may be released by a trigger 82. Movement of the trigger 82 causes fuel from a pump to be ejected on to a valve 202 and a supporting spider 194; at the same time the piston 56 moves the piston 28 to an intermediate position, the suction created by this movement opening the valve 202 and admitting a mixture of fuel and air into the chamber formed between the piston 28 and the end of the cylinder. A spark plug 252, energized by a contact operated by a cam follower 238, ignites the mixture. The explosion drives the piston 28 forwards to produce a blow and the piston 56 backwards where it is again held by the latch. The amount of fuel ejected may be adjusted by a screw 184 and knurled nut 180 altering the position of the trigger and so the travel of the pump plunger. The tool may be used to drive nails or lop branches off trees.
