An explosively actuated tool adapted to drive fasteners, such as nails, into structures comprises a ram 38 slidable in a barrel 30, a magazine 45 for a plurality of explosive charges 46 which can be fed one by one into a combustion chamber 74a under the action of a transfer means 68, 70, a firing pin 80 being provided for igniting the explosive charges 46. The barrel 30 is connected to a breech block 20 which is slidably mounted in a housing 11, 12. The explosive charges are in the form of pellets and contained in a removable container 45 adapted to be located within a bore 27 formed in the breech block. The pellets are urged towards a transfer lever 68 by means of a follower 43 loaded by a spring 44 and mounted in a tube 42; the tube is connected by a bayonettype joint to a guide tube 40 secured to the breech block. In operation, after inserting the container of explosive pellets, the barrel is moved relative to the housing against the action of a spring 51 thereby causing a cam on a casing 60 movable with the barrel to actuate the transfer lever thereby moving the endmost pellet into a bore 74. Upon the return movement of the barrel a second cam on the casing actuates a bolt 70 which moves the pellet into the combustion chamber 74a; the latter cam is so shaped as to cause the bolt to be locked in the position shown in Fig. 7. A nail is now inserted into the front end of the barrel and the latter pressed against the workpiece so that the barrel moves rearwardly thereby causing a striker 50 to be loaded by the spring 51. Upon depressing a trigger 14, the striker is released and abuts the firing pin 80 causing the pellet to ignite and the explosive gases to drive the ram forward.
