A cartridge-actuated tool for driving fasteners comprises a plunger 9 slidable in a barrel 4 and a magazine adapted to hold a number of cartridges 14 which are brought, one at a time, into alignment with a cartridge chamber 13. The magazine, which may be of plastics material, is slidable in a duct 2 and, as shown in Fig. 1, is held therein against the action of a spring 35, by means of a stop 40. The cartridges are pressed into the chamber 13 by means of a ram 16 loaded by a spring 17; the ram is connected to a detent 18 which is arranged to co-operate with a pivoted lever 20 mounted on the barrel 4. In operation, after the muzzle of the tool has been pressed against a workpiece to cock the firing mechanism 50, 55, 58 and the cartridge fired to drive the plunger, the barrel is pivoted upwardly so as to cause an ejector (70, Fig. 2) to eject the spent cartridge. At the same time the plunger is returned by a carrier 71 connected to a link 73 and an arm 20a on the lever 20 is arranged to abut the top of the detent 18. When the barrel is again lowered, the arm 20a on the lever presses on the detent so as to lower the top surface 16a of the ram below the bottom surface of the magazine so that the latter can be moved by the spring 35 to bring another cartridge into line with the chamber 13. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the magazine is held in its duct 105 against the action of a spring 118 by a pivoted lever 120 and the cartridge ram 109 and firing pin 111 are both provided with detents (122, Figs. 8 and 9) adapted to be pressed downwardly by the barrel in order to bring the ram below the magazine and load the firing pin. The arrangement of the magazine may also be applied to tools not having a plunger 9.
