1388835 Cartridge actuated fastener driving tools BRITISH SCREW CO Ltd 1 June 1972 [1 June 1971] 18280/71 Heading B4C [Also in Division F3] A powder actuated device, e.g. a pistol, rifle, machine gun or a tool (as shown), comprises a housing 10, a barrel assembly 20, a firing assembly 21 and a magazine 74 having a plurality of chambers and being secured to the firing assembly to prevent relative movement therebetween in the longitudinal axis of the device but allowing relative movement therebetween in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis. An ejection means is also provided which, after the firing of the device and after the movement of the magazine 74 to bring another live round into line with the firing assembly is displaced into or through the chamber having the spent round therein to clear the chamber. The barrel assembly 21 comprise a barrel 30, a pluger 45 having its forward end slidably mounted in the barrel, and a slide 25 having secured to its rear end a member 37 formed with a stepped bore. A spring 55 acts between the barrel 30 and the member 37 by way of a buffer 52, 53 for the rear end of the plunger 45. The rear end of the plunger 45 is normally slidably housed in a central portion of the stepped bore of member 37. The member 37 is also connected to a seat 61 the arrangement being such that on placing the forward end of the barrel on a work surface and urging the barrel assembly rearwardly to move the seat 61 which in turn, being in engagement with a spring loaded pin 98 mounted in the firing pin 82, moves the firing pin 82 to its cocked condition (as shown). A trigger 17 is provided, which trigger when squeezed pivots such that a peg 22 thereof urges the pin 98 into the firing pin 82 to release the firing pin from the seat 61 and hence allows the firing pin 82 to be urged against the round in the aligned chamber by its spring 93. The magazine is guided in the firing assembly 21 by means of co-operating projections and grooves and a screw 83 limits the traverse movements, which movements are a reciprocation of the magazine relative to the firing assembly. The chambers are formed by inserts housed within bores of a body member of the magazine. The ejection means comprises a spring loaded rod, one on each side of the housing 10, retraction of the slide 23 causing ejection movements of the rods (Figs. 4, 5, not shown).
