Abstract

1429568 Recoil operated breech mechanisms in small arms INDUSTRIE-WERKE KARLSRUHE AUGSBURG AG 5 Sept 1973 [23 Sept 1972] 41658/73 Heading F3C A hand gun has a drum 2 having peripherally spaced cartridge chambers 2a parallel to its barrel 3, the drum having sealing means sealing it with the barrel during firing, a breech mechanism, acting on a gas piston and having sealing means, is adapted to enter into a chamber aligned with the barrel to seal the chamber against gas pressure upon firing and having a cam mechanism for automatically effecting a stepwise rotation of the drum, means for locking the drum during firing and, further means co-operating with a breech block 11 of the mechanism being provided for misfired cartridge ejection. A sealing ring 7 is pressed against the gun barrel 3 by the resulting gas during firing of a caseless cartridge 5a, 5b passing along bores 2b. The cartridge projectile 5a is fired by a firing pin or by electrical detonation as shown from a lead electrode 12 insulated from the other metal parts. This is held in a sleeve 8 held in two axially disposed sleeves 9, 10 mutually engaging by complementary coned surfaces, rearward recoil of the sleeve 8 causing locking of the sleeve 9 in the drum 2 by means of a shoulder of the sleeve 8 and of the sleeve 9. The drum 2, having five chambers, is indexed by a spring loaded pin of the cam mechanism in the breechblock 11, during breechblock recoil, traversing angled grooves 2g, Fig. 4, between successive axial grooves 2d which are traversed during forward breechblock movement for firing. If misfiring occurs, the drum is manually indexed once so that the cartridge is displaced laterally, a lever, operated by breechblock movement and spring aided, actuating a member to contact the nose end of the projectile 5a to eject the cartridge 5 from the rear end of the drum 3. The drum 3 is fed from a magazine, cartridges being fed into the drum successively.
