Abstract

1,253,479. Automatic firearms. WERK. ZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON BUHRLE A.G. 17 June, 1970 [1 July, 1969], No. 29284/70. Heading F3C. A gas operated automatic firearm is provided with a barrel 1 having a gas passage 4 communicating with a chamber 3 which contains a piston 6. An insert 14 is interposed between the forward end of the chamber 3 and the piston 6 the arrangement being such that gas passing through the passage 4 is first conducted by the insert towards the forward end of the chamber and then towards the rearward end of the chamber to actuate the piston 6. In the construction shown the insert 14 which is integral with a plug 5 is formed with two peripheral grooves 15 which are interconnected by a helical groove 16. The rearward peripheral groove 15 communicates with the gas passage 4 and the forward peripheral groove 15 with a rearwardly opening bore 17 in the insert 14 through four radial bores 18. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the majority of the insert is of smaller diameter than the chamber, the rearward end of the insert being formed with a flange to provide a seal with the wall of the chamber. The piston 6 has a piston-rod 7 which abuts a spring loaded breech actuating sleeve 8. Return springs 11 are provided for urging the piston forwardly after a working stroke.
