Abstract

653,693. Automatic guns. VERWALTUNGSGES. DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. June 17, 1948, No. 16362. Convention date, June 20, 1947. [Classes 9 (i) and 92 (ii)] An automatic gun comprises a reciprocating breechloading member 4 and at least one closure bolt 7 pivoted to the breech casing 3 and engaging, when the breech is closed, immediately behind a projection 29 provided on the base of the cartridge case 28 to resist the force due to gas pressure on firing. In the form shown, the breech casing 3 of a fixed barrel gas-operated gun has pivoted thereto at 9, 10 two breech closure bolts 7, 8 the forward surfaces of which are conical to engage a conical surface 29 on the base of the cartridge when the breech is closed as shown. The usual longitudinal slide 4 which serves to load the cartridge into the breech chamber may thus be made light in weight to increase the rate of fire. Each bolt, for example 7, is controlled by a front and rear pair of slides 13, 11 connected by a spring 15. As the cartridge loading member 4 approaches its forward position it engages the slide 11, first to release a forward extension 17 retaining the bolt 7 in open position, and afterwards to press the slide 13 forwards so that the bolt 7 is cammed inwardly over the cartridge base and retained by a surface on the slide engaging a surface 25 on the bolt as the spring 15 expands. On firing, the gas piston 32 moves the slide 13 rearwardly to release the bolt 7 so that the recoil of the cartridge case can then move the bolt outwardly and the member 4 rearwardly to open the breech and stress the return spring 5. The slide 11 then returns to enable its projection 17 to engage under the nose 19 to lock the bolt in its open position.
