Abstract
1295481 Automatic or semi-automatic weapons GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 25 March 1970 [7 April 1969] 14383/70 Heading F3C An automatic or semi-automatic weapon comprises a barrel assembly 12, 14 and a bolt assembly 16 each mounted for recoil and counter-recoil in a receiver 10, and a bolt accelerator 18 having first, second and third elements 84, 88, 86 respectively. The first element 84 is journalled in the barrel assembly 16, the second element 88 co-operates with a cam slot 128 in the receiver 10 and the third element co-operates with a cam surface on the bolt assembly 16 the arrangement being such that, on a shot being fired the barrel and bolt assemblies recoil together until the accelerator 18 is pivoted about its first element by means of the second element working in the cam slot 128 to apply an impulse to the bolt by co-operation of the third element with a portion of the cam surface of the bolt assembly and accelerate it in recoil. After this acceleration the bolt and barrel assemblies are then prevented from relative movement by the engagements of the elements of the accelerator. The said portion of the cam surface of the bolt assembly comprises a surface extending transversely of the axis of the bolt assembly and this portion is preceded by a gap in the surface (Fig. 7, not shown) such that on the firing stroke of the bolt and barrel assemblies, the. bolt assembly moves forward until the third element meets the gap in the surface to allow the cam slot 128 to pivot the accelerator 18 to release and urge forwardly the barrel assembly into the battery position. The barrel assembly is provided with a pair of locking lugs 94, 96 which, when the barrel assembly approaches the battery position are swung out of their recesses by the co-operation of followers 104 thereof with cam slots 286 in an assembly 24 to lock the bolt assembly in the battery position. The ammunition feed is operated by a pair of cam rollers 76 of the barrel assembly engaging feed cam plates 134, 136, the plates rotating a feed plunger carrying crank assembly (Fig. 11, not shown). The feed comprises separate feeds, one at each side of the receiver 10 and a changeover lever 264 is provided for selecting one of the feeds. The bolt assembly is provided with a rammer 210, a pivoted, spring- loaded extractor (Fig. 4, not shown) and a spring-loaded firing pin which forms part of an electrical firing circuit. A bolt buffer and sear assembly 20 is mounted adjacent a backplate assembly 22, the rear end 176b of the sear projecting through the backplate assembly to trigger off the firing of the weapon.
