Bolts are inserted into compact material by a pistol comprising a cap 44 reciprocally mounted on the barrel 42, 30, a slide 54 adapted to be driven by the cap, a striker and an extractor 72 carried by the slide, an opening 52 in the barrel for the introduction of a cartridge 11, and means for starting the action of the striker on the cartridge when the control cap is driven downwards. The extractor, which may be resiliently mounted, is arranged in such a way that it brings the cartridge case, after firing, in front of the opening 52 during the return stroke of the cap 44. In the construction shown the barrel bore 34 is stepped at 35 to provide a seating for the cartridge 11, and the bolt 19 is held in place, prior to firing, by two spring-urged semi-cylindrical members 36 mounted in the wall of the barrel part 30. The initial depression of member 44 causes a spring 55 to drive the slide 54 downwards until a spring-controlled piston 60, initially located in a dwell 62 of the barrel part 42, engages in a dwell 63. At the same time a shoulder 65 of a piston 59, arranged as shown with respect to the piston 60, moves to engage a narrow portion 51 of a slot 50 in the part 42. The part 93 of the pistol is then set against the object which is to receive the bolt 19, and the member 44 is given a vigorous push and a turning movement, the latter being necessary to allow a stop 47, Fig. 6, of the member to follow the helical part of a slot 49 in the part 42. In this movement a ramp 45 on the part 44 depresses the piston 59 clear of the slot 50, and the slide 54 is thus released suddenly and under the action of the spring 55 moves downwardly, its striker pin striking the cartridge 11.
