717,468. Explosively-operated devices for firing bolts. BEHREND. H. Nov. 17, 1952 [Nov. 21, 1951], No. 29038/52. Class 119 An explosively actuated device for firing pins and bolts into masonry, etc., has a barrel 3 containing a bolt 1 and cartridge 2 and expanding sleeve 4 provided with lugs 22 which spring into recesses 20 in the casing 5. The sleeve 4 may be integral with a breech block 23 in front of which is an expanding sleeve 6 bearing against a splinter-guard 7 and having its forward end engaged in recesses 21 in the casing. Within the block 23 a leaf-spring 9 holds in place a locking bolt 8 bearing against a firing-pin 10 extending from a housing 12. The housing 12 has a flange engaging a sleeve 14 within which a compensating spring 13 is held by a head or handle 16. The breech block is spaced from the sleeve 14 by a spring 15. Fixed to a leaf-spring 18 is a trigger 17. To operate the device, the muzzle of the barrel which extends beyond the guard 7 is placed against a wall and pressure applied to the head 16. The barrel 3 forces the lugs 22 out of engagement with the casing 5, whereupon they move into engagement with grooves 30 on the barrel, thus locking the breech block and barrel together. Further pressure on the head 16 causes barrel and breech block to move together rearwardly, bringing the splinter guard into contact with the wall, whereupon the casing 5 moves forward to abut the guard and simultaneously the firing-pin spring 11 and the spring 15 are stressed. The various parts are then in the positions shown in Fig. 2 with the trigger 17 in alignment with the bolt 8, so than on pressing the trigger the bolt is moved out of the path of the firing-pin, which is driven forwards by its spring to fire the cartridge 2 and eject the stud 1. The device may be provided with a barrel containing a plurality of cartridges and studs, the barrel being rotated within the casing 5 to bring the cartridges successively into alignment with the firing-pin. The expanding sleeve 6 may be replaced by a sleeve having seatings for balls which escape radially when pressure is applied to the forward end of the sleeve.
