Abstract

1,011,901. Cartridge-operated tools. K. B. E. HANSEN. Oct. 23, 1963 [Oct. 23, 1962; April 29, 1963], No. 41869/63. Heading B4C. A cartridge-operated nail-driving tool comprises a housing 1 having a nozzle 3 at its forward end to receive a nail 5 and a handle 30 at the other end containing a firing mechanism, a striking bolt 10 connected to a piston 11 which is slidable within a bore 2 in the housing, blocking means 37 adapted to render the firing means inoperative until a predetermined force has been applied to the handle, and at least one exhaust port 19 formed in the housing whereby, upon forward movement of the piston beyond the port, air is trapped in the bore and thereby exerts a braking force on the piston. The housing 1 is slidably mounted in a casing 21 which is coupled by means of a bayonettype joint 31, 32 to the handle 30 pivoted at 28 to the casing in order to facilitate loading the tool with a cartridge. The housing is fitted at its inner end with a threaded plug 16 into which the cartridge is inserted, and at its other end with the nozzle 13, the latter being inter. changeable. A breech block 35 is located in the handle and loaded by a spring 44, a firing pin 40 being slidable in the block and loaded by a spring 45; a spring-loaded bolt 37 is adapted to normally block actuation of the firing pin. In operation, after a cartridge has been inserted into the tool, and a rail 5 located in the nozzle, the latter is pressed against the work against the action of a spring 23, thereby causing the inner end of the housing to act against the block 35 and thereby load both springs 44, 45, as shown in Fig. 7. In this position a leaf spring 53 co-operating with a trigger 50 is brought into alignment with the bolt 37 so that, by depressing the trigger, the firing pin is released to fire the cartridge. The loading of the springs, the relative weights of the piston and striking bolt 10 and the braking force on the piston are as chosen in relation to the explosive force that recoil is not transmitted to the operator.
