Abstract

1326469 Explosively actuated fastener driving tool OLIN CORP 2 Aug 1971 [3 Dec 1970 36291/71 Heading B4C A tool, e.g. for driving fasteners, operated by a propellant pellet, e.g. of nitrocellulose comprises a barrel 4 axially slidable in a housing 2, an anvil 12 in the barrel bore and adjacent an opening 54 in the barrel, the opening being of elliptical section perpendicular to the barrel axis, and a breech block 18 having a nose portion 20 provided with two forwardly extending projections 56 which, when the tool is pressed against a work surface S, extend into the opening 54 on either side of a pellet. Rearward movement of the barrel causes a slide 40, carrying a pivoted firing pin cocking lever 42, to be moved against bias of spring 50. Thus the firing pin 32 is moved against bias of spring 34. Release of the firing pin by depressing trigger 41 causes the tool to be fired. The frusto-conical nose portion 29 of the firing pin causes axial compression of the pellet and also compression towards the unsupported areas of the side wall of the pellet (see Fig. 4).
