Abstract

1,061,349. Cartridge-actuated tools. CARL BAUER. Aug. 27, 1965 [Sept. 7, 1964], No. 36964/65. Heading B4C. A cartridge-actuated tool for driving pins 29 into masonry comprises a driving piston 34, 35 and a cartridge holder 38, 40 normally situated outside the range of action of a release mechanism but brought into range for firing when a pin, inserted into a holder 21, is pressed against a workpiece, the firing position for the release mechanism being the same irrespective of the length of the pin. The pin holder 21 is mounted in a cover 10 which is retained on a tubular member 11 for relative sliding movement by means of a circlip 12. The cartridge holder is formed with a sleeve portion 38 in which the drive piston 34 moves, the piston being formed with a sloping surface 50 for co-operation with a similar surface on an enlarged end 22 on the pin holder 21. In operation, a pin is inserted into the front end of the holder and retained there by magnets 28 acting on a disc 30 placed over the end of the pin. Upon pressing the point of the pin against the workpiece, the disc acts against the holder 21 which, in turn, presses on the sleeve 38 thereby moving the cartridge holder into the cocked position. When the cartridge is fired the piston is driven forwardly to drive in the pin. In the event of the pin being driven into soft material the sloping surface SO of the piston strikes the end 22 of the holder 21 to absorb the excess energy. In a modification, the end 22 of the holder is provided with slits so that it may be expanded into contact with the cover 10 by means of a tapered section formed on the piston.
