Abstract

1333603 Assembly force fits TELETYPE CORP 18 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 60224/70 Heading B3U A tool for inserting a workpiece 16 into a receiving member 38 comprises a member 11 for pushing the workpiece into the receiving member, means for sensing a movement of the workpiece indicating that a minimum withdrawal strength of the workpiece has not been met when the workpiece is pushed into the receiving member, and means for preventing further insertion of the workpiece into the receiving member upon the sensing of said movement. In operation a force is applied to the shaft 11 by sliding a housing 21 to the left, as seen in Fig. 1, so as to disengage the housing from a surface 39 of a blocking member 33 and compress a spring 26 between a slidable spacer 24 and a spacer 13. The end 22 of the housing 21 and the spacer 24 are thus temporarily aligned with a slot 36 in the member 33. If the workpiece has not moved appreciably into the member 38, the spacer 13 will still engage with a surface 41 of the member 33 and so hold the latter against the force exerted by a spring 34. Continued movement of the housing 21 moves the spacer 24 so that it engages a surface 43 of the member 33 and abuts a sleeve 14 of the spacer 13. There is then a direct drive between the force applied to the housing 21 and the shaft 11, and the workpiece 16 is driven into the member 38. If there is an unacceptable press fit the workpiece moves into the member 38 before the spacer 24 has engaged with the surface 43. Thus the spacer 13 disengages from surface 41 before the spacer 24 engages 43 so that the blocking member 33 moves upwardly because of spring 34 to accommodate the spacer 24 and end 22 in the slot 36, and the spacer 13 in the slot 37. Further movement of the spacer 24 is stopped and a solenoid 47 is operated to withdraw blocking member 33 and allow the retraction of spacer 24 and housing 21 to their initial position. The force exerted on the workpiece in response to a particular force exerted on the shaft 11 by the spacer 13 may be altered by the engagement of a drag screw 40 with the shaft 11.
