Abstract

1,146,591. Flexible shafts; positive clutches. SUNBEAM ELECTRIC Ltd. 19 May, 1966 [9 June, 1965], No. 24406/65. Headings F2C and F2U. A clutch 19, 24 for connecting a flexible shaft 10 to a hand tool 4 such as a sheep shearing hand piece comprises a pin 24 fast with a shaft 5 of the tool 4 which pin is engageable in a slot 21 in a cylindrical clutch element 19 fast with the flexible shaft 10 and rotatably mounted in an end fitting 6 of an outer sheath 9. Leftward movement of a control sleeve 29 acts through balls 28, the end fitting 6 and a bearing 15 to move the clutch element 19 left against a return spring 31 into engagement with the pin 24. On full clutch engagement the control sleeve moves left relative to the end fitting 6 and presses the balls 28 radially out into a groove 30 in a handle 1 to lock the clutch in the engaged position. To release the clutch the sleeve 29 is moved right against a spring 33 to permit the balls 28 to be cammed out of the groove 30 and the spring 31 to move the clutch element 19 right to disengage the clutch. Pivotally mounted fingers between the end fitting 6 and handle 1 may be moved into recesses in the handle by the control sleeve 29 to lock the clutch engaged.
