Abstract

1,163,061. Cartridge-actuated tool. STAR EXPANSION INDUSTRIES CORP. 6 Jan., 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 984/67. Heading B4C. An explosive - actuated tool for driving fasteners 102, comprises a piston 28 movably mounted in a barrel 18 which is slidable in a housing 10, the piston being formed with two diameters 30, 34 so as to define a shoulder arranged to co-operate with a key 48 in order to limit the distance the piston can move forwardly relative to the housing. The key 48 is mounted in a screwed plug 46 and provided with shoulders 52 which are urged into contact with a flattened surface on the barrel by means of a compressed rubber block 54 so as to frictionally hold the barrel within the housing; the piston 28 is also provided with a friction member 60 in order to prevent unnecessary movement of the piston within the barrel. The barrel is formed with a slot 40 into which the hooked end 68 of an extractor 62 is adapted to enter when the barrel is moved into the cocked position shown in Fig. 9. After driving the fastener the barrel moved forwardly thereby causing the hook 68 to extract the cartridge which is then removed from the housing via an opening (100, Fig. 1) therein.
